Verified LinkedIn Pages Can Now Remove Fake Employees. The Help Page Still Says You Can't.

LinkedIn's Help Center currently tells Company Page admins that the thing they most want to do is impossible. Checked on September 29, 2026, the live article titled "Remove associated members from a LinkedIn Page" states: "Admins can't directly remove employees from a Page because members have provided this data." It carries a "Last updated" stamp that read six months old on that date.

Six days before that check, on September 23, 2026, LinkedIn announced the opposite. Admins of verified Company Pages can now remove people who falsely claim to work at the company, directly, without opening a support ticket. The help page has not caught up.

Who can remove an employee from a LinkedIn Company Page

If your Page is verified, removal is self-serve as of September 23, 2026. It acts on the Page's associated-people list: that profile stops appearing on your Page and in the search results associated with your company. Social Media Today reported the same day that the option will only be available to verified company pages at this stage.

If your Page is not verified, the button is not there. The only route is the one LinkedIn still documents: a super admin reports the inaccurate employment detail to LinkedIn support and waits for a review.

That is the short answer. The rest matters more, because removal does less than the phrase suggests.

LinkedIn's help page still says admins can't do this

The relevant passage on LinkedIn help article a540867, fetched September 29, 2026, reads:

"Admins can't directly remove employees from a Page because members have provided this data. But only super admins can contact us to report inaccurate employment or education details. We'll review the admin's request and respond as soon as possible."

No mention of verified Pages. No mention of self-serve removal. The companion article "Members associated with a LinkedIn Page" is equally silent on the new flow, and both articles still carried the old guidance when they were checked on September 29, 2026.

This is a staged rollout announced through press, not a generally available feature backed by documentation. Expect the button before the documentation. The SSI discontinuation is another LinkedIn change worth keeping on your radar.

What removal actually does and what it does not

Both halves matter.

What does not change, in TechCrunch's September 23, 2026 wording: "it won't change the member's LinkedIn profile." The claim that they worked at your company stays on it, visible to anyone who reads it. Nobody is deleting a lie here. The lie is being unlinked.

What does change, from the same report: "there will no longer be a clickable link to that company's page from their profile, and their work experience won't display as verified." They also stop appearing on your Page's people list and in company-associated search results.

So the effect is narrower than "remove a fake employee" suggests. What goes is the endorsement: the clickable path into your brand, the verified badge on that role and the roster placement that made the claim look confirmed.

For a reputation problem that is usually enough. For a legal one it is not. If someone is using a false claim of employment to sell, raise money or gain access, removal weakens the signal without retracting the assertion. Decide which problem you have before clicking, because removal also clears the listing off the one surface you control.

LinkedIn VP of Product Oscar Rodriguez framed the intent narrowly to TechCrunch: "We hope that this provides signals and context to members to make decisions." Signals and context. Not enforcement.

It covers full-time employees, not contractors

The scope is limited. TechCrunch reports that Rodriguez "clarified this feature focuses on full-time employees, not contractors or field workers, though they will have other means of claiming their rightful association with the company that employs them."

If your roster carries agency staff, franchise workers, resellers or long-term freelancers who genuinely work with the company, this is not the instrument. Audit for false claims, not untidy ones.

The catch: verified Pages only, at this stage

Here is the detail TechCrunch's write-up does not carry. Social Media Today's September 23, 2026 report states the gate directly. The option will only be available to verified company pages at this stage.

If your Page carries no verification badge, nothing changed for you on September 23.

TechCrunch also reports a separate setting in testing, not shipped, that would let Page admins require any member account that tries to associate with the Page to complete "some sort of workplace verification, like a verification done through their work email address."

The gate behind the gate: what Page verification requires

Page verification is not just a form you fill in. LinkedIn's own documentation sets the criteria: "Eligibility may be based on meaningful engagement with LinkedIn, such as posting regularly, or responding to members, as well as having an established commercial relationship with LinkedIn." LinkedIn names that relationship explicitly, citing recurring commercial products like "Ads, Jobs, or a Premium Company Page subscription."

Three constraints follow, and all three are load-bearing.

1. A super admin has to ask, "from the Settings page in your super admin view from the desktop experience." 2. Domain ownership has to be proven: "you need to prove ownership of your Page's website." 3. A free trial does not count: "Verification for your Page is not available if you are using a free trial version of Premium Company Page."

And meeting every criterion still guarantees nothing. LinkedIn's wording: "Meeting these criteria does not guarantee verification."

Read together, the path to the remove button runs through a commercial relationship with LinkedIn, super-admin access, domain proof and a review that can say no. That is a procurement conversation, not a settings toggle.

If your Page is not verified, this route still works

The old workflow was never switched off, and for unverified Pages it is the only option. A super admin uses the "Contact us" path from LinkedIn's help article on associated members and reports the inaccurate employment detail. LinkedIn's stated commitment is to "review the admin's request and respond as soon as possible," which is not a service-level target.

Two things make that ticket land better. Send it from the super admin account, since the documented process accepts no other role. And attach specific profile URLs and the specific false claim, because the review is per-claim.

What to check before clicking remove

LinkedScore's founder ran corporate social at QIAGEN, and the pattern held there: a messy employee roster is rarely all fraud.

Sort the associated-people list into three buckets. People who never worked there. People who left and never updated their profile. People attached through a contract or agency. Only the first bucket belongs in this tool.

Screenshot the profile and the Page listing first, with the date visible.

Then look at the real employees left standing. The People section is a credibility surface buyers read, and vague profiles undercut a clean list as much as a fake one does. Fixing what genuine team members put in their LinkedIn headline moves that surface further than any removal will, without the tactics that quietly kill authority.

Frequently asked questions

Can a LinkedIn Page admin remove an employee? As of September 23, 2026, yes, if the Company Page is verified. Those admins can remove people who falsely claim to work there from the Page's associated people and from company-associated search results. Unverified Pages still report the claim to LinkedIn support.

Does removing someone delete their LinkedIn profile? No. Per TechCrunch's September 23, 2026 report, removal "won't change the member's LinkedIn profile" and the employment claim stays on it. What goes away is the clickable link to your Page and the verified display on that work experience.

Does this cover contractors and freelancers? No. TechCrunch reports the feature focuses on full-time employees, not contractors or field workers. Those groups get other ways to claim a legitimate association.

Why does LinkedIn's help page still say admins can't remove employees? Because LinkedIn had not updated it as of September 29, 2026. The article still states the old rule under a "Last updated" stamp that read six months old when checked on that date, and the companion article on associated members had not been updated either.

What does Page verification cost? LinkedIn does not price verification directly. It ties eligibility to an established commercial relationship, naming products like Ads, Jobs or a Premium Company Page subscription, and it excludes Pages running a free trial of Premium Company Page.

The short version for Page admins

The button is real, it was announced on September 23, 2026 and it is gated twice: once behind Page verification and again behind what verification demands. Qualifying for the tool can take longer than using it.

Check your own Page before planning around it, treat the help page as out of date rather than authoritative and keep the support route ready for claims you cannot reach yourself. To work through your Company Page presence with someone who has run this from the inside, Book a session.
