Why your headline is the most-read line on LinkedIn

Your headline follows you everywhere on the platform. It sits under your name in search results, in the feed on every post you publish, next to every comment you leave and inside every connection request you send. Most of the people who read it will never click through to your profile. For them the headline is not the preview. It is the whole impression.

That is also why the default headline is so expensive. LinkedIn fills it with your job title and your employer, and most people never change it. "Marketing Director at Acme" tells a stranger what your company calls you. It does not tell a client what you can do for them, a recruiter why you beat the other profiles in the shortlist or an investor why your company matters. And it rarely contains the words those people actually type into search.

What this LinkedIn headline analyzer checks

The analyzer reads your headline against the same five questions I use in a manual profile audit:

It then returns a 0 to 100 score for your stated goal, the three issues that cost you the most and one rewrite. The rewrite uses only what your headline already says. Where it needs a specific you have not given, it leaves a bracketed placeholder for you to fill, because a tool that invents achievements for you is writing fiction on your behalf.

The formula behind strong headlines

Every headline that scores high here does three things: it names who you help, the outcome you get them and the proof that you can deliver it. Who, outcome, proof. In that order, in words your audience would search for. If your score came back lower than you hoped, that formula is the repair kit. I break it down with real before and after examples in the LinkedIn headline formula.

And remember what this tool cannot see. A headline sits on top of a photo, a banner, an About section and a body of posts, and readers judge all of it together. The free LinkedScore analysis reads the whole profile and your actual posts, then hands you a full plan, not just one line.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free?

Yes. No signup, no email, no card. Score as many versions of your headline as you like. The full profile analysis on the homepage is free too.

Do you store my headline?

No. When you click the button your headline is sent to our analysis engine, scored and returned to your screen. We do not save it, log it or connect it to you in any way. Refresh the page and it is gone.

What is a good score?

Most headlines that are just a job title and a company land between 30 and 55 here. That is by design. The analyzer is honest, not flattering, because a comfortable score would not tell you anything. Above 70 means who, outcome and proof are all present. Treat your first score as the baseline, apply the fixes and run it again.
